“Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”
John Lennon wrote these lyrics about his experiences with his son Sean, whose mother is Yoko Ono. That line (the song is called “Beautiful Boy” by the way) always seems to pop up in my head whenever things don’t turn out the way I planned them to be. Though sometimes, that’s not always a bad thing.
During the Holy Week, I had planned to relax, eat and enjoy the fabulous food Singapore has to offer during my week-long stay there. But on the fourth day, feeling a bit bloated and shameful of my extravagant bingeing, I decided to go on a fasting diet from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday. I would just have banana and water every day and no coffee, wine, G&T or whisky till Sunday, I said to myself. Though I also had serious doubts whether I could stick to it for four days.
Well, the great news is that not only did I stick to it over the three days, I have in fact acquired a new diet – a low-carb, low sodium, fruits & veg with protein diet. All thanks to the little salad shop near my hotel, which I serendipitously found on my way to buy bananas!
The salad shop offers the option of making my own salad (bowl or wrap) and I never really imagined choosing what to put in my salad bowl would be so exciting! So, for three days (which got extended to Sunday), I was having a salad bowl for lunch and a salad wrap for dinner.
The two most surprising things I found out about my new salad diet are: 1) It’s really delicious & filling and, 2) It’s addictive & fun. OK, that’s four surprising things then. Back at home, I have been making my own salads every day. I eat it not because I want to be healthy and lose weight (I do) but because I love it! Salads are cool.
If you wish to know how to make greens and beans more exciting, check out “Jamie Oliver’s principles for superb salads” on YouTube. I ordered a salad spinner from Amazon after watching this.
Happy Summer everyone!
