We’re all obsessed with how our body looks on the outside and a large proportion of us take steps to make sure we keep it feeling and looking healthy. But what’s the point in looking after the outside if you’re insides are a mess?

From your liver to your lymph nodes, these are the organs most people don’t actively think about, what they do and what to feed them for optimal performance.



What they do: These little guys are crucial to maintaining a healthy body. Our kidneys play a vital role in keeping the body’s conditions constant including water, pH, salt levels and blood composition. Kidneys are also crucial for filtering and extracting waste from our blood by producing urine.

How to look after them:

Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water – around two to three litres a day. If your stream is nearly clear after you go to the bathroom, you’re getting enough fluid. Dark yellow to brown? Drink more water.



What it does:

The gallbladder sits just under the liver and although small in size, it plays an important part as it helps us to digest our food. The gall bladder stores bile until it is needed for digesting fatty foods in the small intestine.

How to look after it:

Limit the amount of saturated fats and cholesterol-heavy foods in your diet, such as fast food, fried foods and fatty red meats, to keep the gallbladder in peak condition.



What it does:

Want to lose weight? The liver is your best friend. “The liver produces bile, helping to transport waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion. While it’s also vital for producing certain proteins for blood plasma, the liver also helps in the excretion of good cholesterol and hormones.

How to look after it:

Spinach triggers enzymes that cleanse the liver with its natural source of glutathione. Best not to lump the liver with a load of foods that contain high levels of saturated and trans fats, as you could end up with Fatty Liver Disease.



What they do: They rid the body of carbon dioxide as well as taking in oxygen. These are a pair of organs that are vital for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide between the air we breathe and the blood – a process known as respiration. Along with aiding the body in getting rid of carbon dioxide, the lungs help oxygen from air we breathe penetrate red cells in the blood.

How to look after it: Eating garlic could help with its high levels of allicin, a super-powered antioxidant that can help to destroy harmful free radicals in the body.



What it does: Situated in the abdomen, the pancreas releases digestive enzymes that play a crucial role in converting food we eat into fuel for the cells in our body. Additionally, the pancreas produces insulin, a hormone that helps control the blood sugar levels in our bodies.

How to look after it: Garlic and other foods in the same family like fenugreek, leeks, chives and onions will all help as well. They all contain sulfur, arginine, selenium and flavonoids that have been shown to reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer.
