I lived by a favourite saying which goes, “The best way to predict the future is to create it”. As we celebrate Healthy Options 20th Anniversary this month, I can honestly and proudly say that we didn’t predict our future, we created it. We, the people of Healthy Options, created our future.
It’s hard for some of our people today (who are mostly Millennials) to imagine the modest beginnings of Healthy Options in October 1995. We had one store manager, four customer assistants, one store assistant, and a part-time unpaid employee (me). Between us, we managed the 106sqm store in Shangri-La Plaza mall working just one shift – opening and closing - seven days a week.
We had no office, no warehouse, and no support staff. Heck, I didn’t even know I needed a License to Operate from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) – which is now the FDA! Luckily for me when I turned up at the BFAD office in Alabang looking lost, some kind souls assisted me and guided me on how to comply with all the rules and regulations.
We may not have started with a grand strategy or big plans (though we did have a vision), we always knew Healthy Options would be a different kind of company.
Our values, principles and unique Company culture were created and perfected over time and are lived by our people. They were not created by some focus group discussions or by some fancy PR agency. These values and beliefs gave Healthy Options its unique DNA and personality which now defines us. To some, Healthy Options is almost like a cult!
We have twenty wonder years to celebrate because our people and our customers believe. Healthy Options is a success story because our people and our customers believe.
To our loyal customers, thank you all for believing. Thanks also to our business friends, partners and vendors for believing. And most of all, thank you to our Healthy Options angels (past and present) for believing. The next twenty years will be even more fun, exciting and fulfilling. Happy 20th Anniversary, Healthy Options!
In this Extra Special 20th Anniversary Issue, let me take you down the memory lane with twenty ‘throwback’ articles that appeared in our News Digest. As you’ll see, they are as current and relevant as ever. Enjoy!
