Would You Need to Take Supplements Even If You Eat Right?
Healthy Options
Supplements

It’s become such a positive trend that people are becoming more and more aware of their health and that living healthy is a lifestyle many people are striving to abide by. From early morning yoga sessions, 10 kilometer after-work runs, intense 30 minute CrossFit sessions, to even daily meditation practices, living a healthy lifestyle is a mainstay and only growing in popularity.

For anyone conscious about their health, good nutrition is the foundation and usually the starting point for anybody looking to improve their health. Whether you opt to increase your intake of organic vegetables, choose all-natural meat over factory farmed versions, adopt a plant-based diet, or have a daily green smoothie, the key idea is to give your body the nutrients it needs to keep you looking and feeling your best.

While the common rule is always food first then supplements, many people ask is if they already eat right, how much supplements should I take and what are supplements benefits to an already healthy diet?

The best supplements will vary from individual to individual depending on their needs. Lifestyle, age, nutritional deficiencies, and gender all play a role in what type of supplements would best suit their lifestyle. No matter how healthy anybody’s lifestyle may be, supplements should be part of a healthy and balanced diet.

Food first, then supplements

Even with a healthy diet, everybody would benefit from taking some form of supplement. Below are reasons why even individuals who are vigilant over their nutrient intake need to take supplements for optimum health.

1. Food isn’t as nutritious as it used to be

It may be minimal and inconsistent, but people need supplements. Unfortunately, the reality of living in the 21st century means that food isn’t as nutritious as it can be. Due to pollution, pesticide use, and soil degradation even a pantry stocked with the freshest premium ingredients would be well complemented with supplements.

For instance, common nutrient deficiencies such as iron, Vitamin D and magnesium can easily be remedied with supplements. In fact, these nutrients are must have supplements seeing as majority of the population is deficient in these nutrients.

2. Modern lifestyle depletes nutrients

Modern lifestyles are typically busy, fast paced, and expose people to a host of toxins and stressors that quickly deplete nutrients from the body. Supplements are a convenient and quick way to replenish and sustain vital nutrients the body needs to keep up with a modern lifestyle, especially when a healthy meal isn’t easily accessible or consistently available.

 3. Disease prevention

Prevention is always better than cure and supplements are beneficial when it comes to preventing diseases. Supplementing with vitamin C to boost the immune system, calcium to prevent osteoporosis, antioxidants to reduce inflammation, collagen to enhance skin and joint health, and adaptogens to counter stress are some of the many supplement options to choose from to prevent disease and enhance health. While you can prevent these diseases with food, the concentration and amount needed can be a hindrance and the ready convenience of supplements make disease prevention through nutrition that much easier.

The key takeaway to good nutrition is to always put food first as the majority source of nutrients with supplements being an essential second tier. Filling in nutritional gaps or enhancing health through supplements is easy, convenient and beneficial for any individual looking to optimize their health.

Look to your own specific needs to see if you’d benefit from having a boost in minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, probiotics or a mixture of these nutrients. Fortunately, the benefits of supplementation are well documented so the options are quite endless when stocking your pantry with the best supplements your body needs to thrive.
