Methylsulfonylmethane, commonly sold and referred to as MSM is a dietary supplement. MSM is naturally derived from animal and plant sources. It is used for a wide variety of reasons including inflammation, oxidative stress, and skin and hair health.

MSM for Joint Health

Arthritis is one of the most common uses of MSM used in complementary and alternative medicine. Arthritis is a condition of inflammation in the joints that increases pain, joint stiffness, and mobility.

MSM has an anti-inflammatory effect on the joints by reducing inflammatory proteins expressed in the body. In human studies, people have reported less pain, less joint stiffness and increased mobility after supplementing with MSM for 12 weeks.

Glutathione is an anti-oxidant that helps with overall health in your body. It acts as an anti-oxidant which means it combats free radicals which are disease causing molecules that can cause damage to your body’s cells.

 

MSM Benefits for Hair and Nails

Keratin is a protein helping to build strong, shiny and healthy hair and nails. MSM may help to maintain normal keratin levels in the hair, skin and nails to help increase the shine and strength of hair.

When hair and nails are stronger they are less likely to crack and get split ends improving overall appearance. In a small study conducted on men and women shine, decreased split ends, increased shine and volume improved overall hair appearance in people supplementing with 3 grams of MSM supplements per day for 4 months.

 

MSM Dosage

MSM supplements are generally considered safe to use. Many studies indicate a dosage recommendation of 3g per day to see optimal benefits. Although there have been limited studies on humans showing adverse reactions to MSM, usage should be limited to less than 4g per day because some reactions have been seen in rat and other animal studies in limits above 4g per day.
