When we think of superfood leafy green vegetables, often kale and spinach come to mind. But a more under the radar leafy green that’s coming up in the latest health craze is seaweed, so much so it has been fondly dubbed as ‘the next kale’.

Because of its mythos, seaweed was considered a luxury food due to its seemingly magical healing properties. Today, these magical healing properties are attributed to the many health benefits it brings.  Here’s why you should be getting more of this super green food in your diet and see why it belongs way up there with other power leafy greens such as kale and spinach.

1. Iodine Rich

Need your fix of iodine to support healthy thyroid function? Eat more seaweed which is rich in this nutrient. Since our bodies can’t produce iodine on its own, food sources are a must. Lack of iodine has been linked to goiter, weight gain, mood imbalances such as anger and depression, constipation and fatigue. Eat seaweed to prevent iodine deficiency and ensure that your thyroid is working in good condition.

2. High in micronutrients

While many vegetables contain a variety of nutrients, micronutrients can be hard to come by, but you can find it in seaweed. Micronutrients such as folate, selenium, chromium, manganese, and sulphur are found in seaweed, which is important for a variety of metabolic functions. Bonus points that these micronutrients are in a form that’s easily absorbed by the body.

3. High in vitamins

Yes seaweed contains good amounts of micronutrients, it is also high in nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, and E making the nutrient value in seaweed very valuable as it promotes healthy skin, good eyesight, and strong immune function. The dynamic variety of nutrients found in seaweed make it a superfood.

 4. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

One of the few vegan foods that have EPA and DHA, seaweed is high in omega 3 fatty acids. The importance of getting plenty of omega fatty acids in our diet is integral to good health as it is reduces inflammation, promotes mental health, and prevents heart disease. Consuming seaweed gives you all these benefits.

 5. Sustainable

This veggie from the sea, in comparison to other vegetables is easy to ‘farm’. Seaweed grows quickly and abundantly, and is a hardy plant as it doesn’t take too many natural resources to grow, needing only rocks or the ocean floor to grow out off. Getting seaweed is a matter of harvesting this fast growing plant, making it a sustainable choice for a leafy green vegetable staple.

Add seaweed to your diet and get the seaweed health benefits by incorporating them into salads, eating roasted seaweed sheets, adding it to soups and sprinkling it on top of rice. It goes without saying too, apart from the health benefits of adding seaweed to your diet, it’s delicious as well!
