“Juicing” has become a popular movement in recent years. While there are many unproven claims (such as flushing out toxins), the benefits of fruit juice on your health are also numerous. There are many different juice flavors to excite your taste buds, and each one gives your body something different in terms of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

While experts don’t recommend replacing meals with juice, adding all-natural fruit drinks to your diet can encourage you to try fruits and vegetables you wouldn’t normally eat, giving you an extra dose of good stuff for your body.

Going Beyond Orange Juice

Citrus fruit juices like orange and lemonade, as well as pineapple, apple, and mango juice made from concentrate are popular locally. But many of the ready-to-drink juices in the market have a lot of added sugar. Why not try making your own? These natural fruit juice ideas can get you started.

BEET

Beets are a root vegetable, and they have a reddish purple color. Cooking beets may reduce the veggie’s nutritional profile, so taking it in juice form is a great way to reap the amazing benefits.

More studies are needed but the research on beetroot juice so far looks promising: It may improve stamina, as shown in a study of trained cyclists who drank two cups of beetroot juice daily. It may increase muscle power for people with heart failure, as shown in another study.  And it may even reduce cholesterol, as exhibited in a study on rats.

Beetroot juice is also a good source of minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, copper, and selenium, as well as of Vitamin C.

Start drinking beetroot juice in small doses and see how your body reacts. It’s worth noting that it may give your stool a reddish tinge; that’s normal and shouldn’t be a cause for alarm. But if you have low blood pressure or if you’re prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones, consult with your doctor first before including beetroot juice in your diet.

ACAI

Acai berry is a round, purple-black fruit, somewhat similar in appearance to a grape, and is native to South America. Touted as a superfood, acai berry is said to be richer in antioxidants than other berries.

There are currently no conclusive studies to confirm its superpowers, but it does seem to contain a higher level of antioxidants than other berries. As it’s often described as having a berry-like taste with a hint of chocolate, it makes for an interesting flavor addition to your juice menu.

PRUNE

Prunes are made of dried plums and look like supersized raisins. Prune juice has long been a go-to drink for those with constipation as prunes contain sorbitol, a laxative, as well as lots of fiber. But prune juice also offers a host of other benefits, such as helping prevent iron deficiency due to its high iron content and managing hypertension. Thinking of adding prune juice to your diet? Start with small doses—taking too much too soon might shock your system and upset your stomach. It also has a high sugar and calorie content, so make sure not to go overboard.

POMEGRANATE

Pomegranates are a somewhat oddly shaped red fruit with a profusion of sac-enclosed seeds, where the juice comes from. It seems like there’s nothing pomegranate juice can’t do. The antioxidant powerhouse has an impressive host of benefits, from improving athletic performance to preventing cancer and Alzheimer’s disease to protecting your heart and arteries. It also packs quite the Vitamin C punch: The juice of one pomegranate meets 40% of your daily Vitamin C needs.

You can mix fruit with vegetables to cut back on the sweetness and increase the benefits for your body. Whichever flavor you choose, remember that the healthiest fruit juices are those with no added sugar. If you can’t make your own, go for those that are all natural.
