Our skin is the most visible part of our body. Since it is on the surface, it catches all the pollution, dirt, and many other particles that can cause skin irritation and other skin problems if not properly taken care of. Therefore, since the skin is something that we use literally every day, many products have been introduced to keep it clean and promote skin health.

Products such as facial cleansers, vitamins, facial masks, moisturiziers are only to name a few. But there are two commonly used products worldwide - astringents and toners.

Astringent vs toner for acne and astringent vs toner for oily skin are the usual debates people have. Since many suffer from acne and oily skin, it’s important to know which one you need to use.

Both are water based products both used to maintain and improve the outer layer of our skin. Both are considered to clean our pores and skin surface. But many ask, which is which and how do they really differ from one another? Don’t they have the same function and effect? What specific differences do they have when it comes to cleaning?

Although both are used to clean the skin, what makes the two different from one another are their active ingredients and the way they affect the skin surface when used.

Toners can be considered as something that readies the skin for other solutions to penetrate into the skin. We can say that it conditions the skin for a more effective result when we use stronger products for our beauty regimen. Astringents on the other hand are more alcohol based and designed to remove excess oil and that is in our skin.

Toners have glycerin, which is a form of glycol that helps the skin in to get the moisture it needs to maintain good levels of pH in our skin. It is advisable to use toners for sensitive skin. Since it is also water based, toners can have natural ingredients that are mild, thus, it won’t have harsh effects on the skin. It keeps the skin hydrated and can help remove free radicals from the skin.

Astringents can be much stronger when used on the skin. Since it is alcohol based, its active ingredients may cause irritation or dryness if overused or for those with dry or sensitive skin.

What to use: astringent or toner for oily skin?

If you experience excessively oily skin or you have acne-prone skin, it is best to use astringents. When applied to the skin, it penetrates from deep within and removes the oil that can cause acne problems.

Typical ingredients found in astringents are salicylic acid that is commonly known to fight bacteria that causes skin problems. It tightens the pores and removes residue in our face. It is effective in removing dirt that can cause irritation to the skin.

Toners on the other hand, may also remove residue in our face, but it is advisable to use it for those who have more sensitive skin types. It balances your skin mantle and can cause temporary tightening of the pores. Although it can also remove oil, its best effects are to moisturize and tone the surface of the skin. Keeping the skin hydrated is a good factor to keep the face soft and radiant.

Whether we decide to use toners and astringents or not, our face has its natural way to clean and maintain itself due to its natural oils. Products like these two are still best used with your skin type in mind. Stick to natural formulas and nourish your skin from within. Make sure to be informed which product to use depending on our skin type and be responsible when using them on a daily basis.
